How to prepare for worry-free holidays without your dog

How to prepare for worry-free holidays without your dog

More Australians are favouring Pet Sitting Service websites for the speed and easy convenience they offer.

However, if you, like many of us lead a hectic lifestyle, don’t leave your pet holiday preparation until the last minute. Here’s a few helpful tips to help you get started…

Preparation before you begin your search

1. Make sure you complete your Pet’s full profile (which includes their Emergency contact person)

Before your Pet’s stay begins, make sure you complete your Pet’s full profile. Your chosen Sitter will need to know your Pet’s Emergency Contact person while you’re away, whether your pet is desexed, & what they eat. This is a 1 time set up only.

2. Be sure your pet (if they’re a dog) responds to basic commands

Be sure your dog responds to basic commands and is well socialised around both other people and pets; if your dog has an aggression problem or is otherwise unruly, he/she may not be a good candidate for pet sitting.

3. Ensure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations

Ensure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations before taking him to the Pet Sitters home to stay. It is a measure of a quality service if companies do ask for vaccination proof as it guarantees your pet stays in a hygienic environment.

4. Ensure your dog is de-flead & up-to-date on flea control treatments

Fleas can be prevented easily and effectively with a once a month topical solution or tablet.

5. Ensure your dog is up-to-date on Heart Worm + Gut Worming (Gut / Instinal Wormers are known as ‘All wormers’ but do not include Heart worm)

Ensure your dog is up-to-date on Heart Worm and also Intestinal Worming (this can be x2 different monthly tablet types purchased from Vets or supermarkets or Pet Stores)

Apply Heart Worm and Gut Worming Tablets

6. Ensure that either your pet is desexed or you have selected a Sitter whose pets are desexed

Ensure that either your pet is desexed or you have selected a Sitter whose pets are desexed – you want to avoid returning home to a pregnant pet. Don’t forget to add this to your pet’s profile.

7. Ensure your Pet is microchipped

8. Ensure your pets are wearing all their IDs tags

Ensure your Pet is registered with your local council and is wearing the registration tag on their collar. Also ensure your pet is wearing an engraved ID tag on their collar.

9. Enough quality food / meals + poo bags or litter trays

Make sure you have enough wet and dry food for your Pet and meaty bones (+ 2 extra days) to last them while you’re away.  If not, you’ll need to go shopping beforehand as Sitters do not provide food.

Shop from a Pet Store not a supermarket to get the best quality food such as Black Hawk or Hills Science Diet.
