What is a Corgi?
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was originally bred to herd cattle. They originated from Wales in the United Kingdom. There are two types of Corgis: the Pembroke and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. They are the smallest herding dogs and they became popular from Queen Elizabeth II. She’s had over 30 Corgis during her reign as queen. Not only are they popular among the Brits, but they’re a favourite in the United States as well. With their friendly and outgoing nature, it’s no wonder they’re a common pet!
What do Corgis look like?
Corgis have a very distinct look and most people can point them out instantly. They have long bodies and stubby legs. Their faces can be fox-like and when they walk, they make little bum waddles. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi comes in 5 different colours (usually with a white trim): red, red-headed tricolour, black-headed tricolour, sable and fawn, Females weigh about 11-13g while males range from 11-14kg. As for height, they range from 17-32 centimeters tall!
What makes Corgis special?
Not only are Corgis known for herding cattle and being the best cuddle buddies, they’re actors too! They’ve been featured on The Crown, a popular Netflix series as well as popular American show Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Queen Elizabeth II met her first Corgi when King George VI brought one home from the kennel in 1931. The Corgi’s name was Dookie and he was an immediate hit in the Royal Family. Some of the Corgis bred with Princess Margaret’s Dachshund Pipkin. This crossbreed was named Dorgis. Corgis are definitely at the forefront of popular culture when it comes to dogs!
How often do I need to groom my Corgi?
Corgis have a medium-dense double-coat and they shed consistently. When it comes to grooming, it’s recommended you give them a weekly brushing. This will help collect fur from shedding. If you want to take your Corgi to a professional groomer, they can go 2-3 a year. They’re not overly high maintenance!
How often should I walk my Corgi?
Corgis naturally have tons of energy and because they were bred for herding cattle, they inherently love being active. It’s important to walk your Corgi for at least 30-60 minutes daily. They prefer colder temperatures so it;s best to go in the mornings and evenings. Playing games with your Corgi will keep them challenged and mentally stimulated!
How do I train my Corgi?
Corgis are known for being a little stubborn when it comes to training. The best thing you can do is start early with your pup. It’s important to establish boundaries and show your Corgi who’s boss. When your pupper obeys you and does a good job, you can use positive reinforcement techniques like praise, treats and enthusiasm to encourage it! Because they generally have lots of energy, you can make your training sessions fun by adding in some games.

Corgis can be left alone during the day! If you’re someone who needs to go to the office or run some errands for a few hours, then they’re perfect for you. As long as you walk your pup before and after to get some energy out, then you and your home will be fine.
Are Corgis “barkers”?
Corgis can be very, very vocal. They’re often territorial and on watch if you have big windows. Once they see or hear movement, they want to tell you about it! If you’re aren’t a fan of barking, you can train your Corgi from an early age not to bark. This can be a process, but stay consistent and positive.
What kind of health risks do Corgis face?
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are achondroplastic which means they’re a “dwarf breed.” This can result in non-inherited health issues in the future. Corgis can suffer from hip dysplasia, monorchidism and Von Willebrand disease (blood clotting).
