What Is a Goldendoodle?

A goldendoodle is not a purebred dog. It is a designer hybrid from a poodle and a golden retriever. These dogs were first bred in the United States by breeders who were looking for the next ‘labradoodle,’ another popular canine hybrid.  Goldendoodles are growing in popularity among Australians because of their intelligence, playful nature, and love of the outdoors. Although a popular family dog, this hybrid has also achieved success as guide dogs and therapy dogs. These dogs love attention from their owners and enjoy households with kids. Moreover, they don’t mind living in either the city or rural settings provided they have plenty of space to romp around. This hybrid is not ideal for apartment settings. Goldendoodle’s are also highly companionable dogs; they prefer to live with their owners / families and not in a kennel or outdoors.

What Do Goldendoodle’s Look Like?

A goldendoodle’s appearance and size can range depending on the genetic traits inherited from their different parents. These dogs can range in weight considerably between 6 and 36 kg. However, some examples have weighed in at roughly 45 kg.

The goldendoodle features a thick coat that may be tan, red, cream, black, brown, or gray. In some cases, they may shed lightly owing to their golden retriever heritage; however, they may also be non-shedders like poodles. Weekly brushing is recommended. Some Aussies prefer to have their Goldendoodle’s hair shaved during the hot season.

What Makes the Goldendoodle Special?

The goldendoodle is revered for its high energy and playful nature. It enjoys being part of the family and is even regarded as a great pet for first-time dog owners. It’s typically easy to train and is not prone to aggression–certainly not when properly socialized from a young age.  Another reason that many people gravitate to this hybrid is because its low-to-no shedding coat makes it an ideal choice among allergy or asthma sufferers. Goldendoodles have made excellent therapy and guide dogs too. They have also been trained to sniff out peanuts for people who suffer from nut allergies.

How Often Do I Need to Groom My Goldendoodle?

Owners should plan to brush their goldendoodle’s coat at least twice per week to keep it from getting knotted or matted up. Bathing is not essential unless the dog has gotten dirty. Plan to clip its nails once or twice per month. Many owners opt to have their goldendoodle’s coat clipped for maintenance ease.

How Often Should I Walk My Goldendoodle?

Goldendoodle’s thrive with daily exercise. This dog should have at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. Two walks per day or outdoor time in the yard should suffice for its exercise needs. However, owners with playful younger dogs may want to extend playtime to help the dogs burn off some of their exuberance and energy.

How Do I Train My Goldendoodle?

With their intelligence and overall medium energy level, goldendoodle’s are highly trainable. This dog responds well to positive reinforcement. It is a people pleaser and is happy to cooperate. Try to stay positive and reward your dog’s good behavior. Keep training sessions short but consistent for best results.

Yes, you can leave your Goldendoodle alone, but keep in mind that these dogs are prone to separation anxiety. The goldendoodle’s tendency to bark is considered average.

Are there Goldendoodle health risks I should know about?

Goldendoodles are associated with certain health risks that owners should look out for. These include: elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, ear infections, and hypothyroidism.

Where Can I Get a Goldendoodle?

Various kennels in Australia specialize in this hybrid. Google ‘Goldendoodle puppies or rescues’ plus your location to locate them. Before purchasing from any breeder, be sure to do your research to ensure that the breeder adheres to best breeding practices. The RSPCA features a handy guide for finding the right breeder.
