Whether you are a Pet Sitter or a Pet Owner, lovable pets can bring with them some not so lovable problems. From those puppy potty training mishaps and litter box misses to the results of an unpalatable meal, pet stains can be among the most difficult to deal with.
Act Fast – When it comes to removing pet stains, it is important to remove them as quickly as possible, since urine is acidic and may bleach the carpet.
- Soak Up the Urine with a thick Paper Towel
Using a thick layer of paper towel, blot the stain to remove as much moisture as possible.
2. Create a solution of 50% White Cleaning Vinegar and 50% Water
White Cleaning vinegar from the Cleaning Aisle in your supermarket is the go-to household item to get rid of pet urine stains. The vinegar is acidic, it will neutralise the bacteria in the wee, eliminating its odour. Place in a spray bottle and spray on stain.
3. Let It Sit for a few minutes
Once applied, let the vinegar sit before blotting dry. Spray again and blot dry again if necessary to until odours can’t be smelled.
4. Back it up with a citrus enzyme spray
Using a drop of dish liquid in a spray bottle and dash of citrus scent such as Orange, Lemon, or Lemon Myrtle will throw the dog’s sense of smell, so they don’t continue going in the same spot.
While it is of course important to deal with the stain as quickly as possible, that does not mean frantically scrubbing at the fresh stain right away. A better approach is to contain the stain to keep it from spreading, remove any solids and place a hot, wet paper towel over the area. After the towel is in place, press down on it to help absorb the remaining liquid. The heat from the wet towel will help to transfer the stain out of the carpet or the fabric.
After as much of the stain has been removed as possible, the towel can be removed and discarded, and the area can be dried as much as possible. A high powered fan works well for this purpose. If further cleaning is needed, there are a number of commercial products designed to remove pet stains. Many of these specialized cleaning products use natural enzymes to break down the pet stains and carry them up and out of the carpet. It is a good idea for pet owners to keep a supply of these special cleaning products on hand.
If specialized cleaning products are not available, a simple solution of vinegar and water can make a good substitute. The vinegar will help to cut through the wet stains and organic material, while the water will help to clean the carpet or material. If cleaning upholstery or similar materials, especially delicate fabrics, it is a good idea to spot test an inconspicuous area first to make sure the cleaning products being used will not damage the material.
