HISTORY
As its name suggests the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a regal history as a favourite lap dog of kings and princes. Vastly popular in recent times they are not just passing fad, having a long history, existing in the 16th and 17th centuries.
PERSONALITY TRAITS AND BEHAVIOUR
Family: An indoor dog who loves, and needs, to be a part of the family. Ideal for all ages, for families and the elderly. Housedogs who are attached to their people and should not live outdoors.

Personality: A dependant personality who love to be with people and shouldn’t be left alone for long periods of time. Consider doggy day care during the working week or pet sitting when away for holidays.
Temperament: Happy, friendly, non-aggressive. Generally has no tendency to nervousness.
Trainability: Eager to please and wonderfully simple to train. Intelligent and willing to try whatever you’d like them to do. Food rewards and positive reinforcement ensure smooth training process.
Cavaliers, like many toy breeds, can have issues with housetraining. Keep them on a consistent schedule, with plenty of opportunities to go to the toilet outdoors they can become trustworthy in the home.
Sociability (other pets): Social butterfly that is excellent with other dogs and pets. A spaniel at heart, he may try to chase birds, rabbits and other small prey.
Barking: Medium tendency; may bark when someone comes to the door but because of their friendly nature, they aren’t good guard dogs.
GROOMING
Grooming Needs: At least a good brush once a week to avoid matting and a bath as required.
Coat Type: Long, silky and free from curls but with a light wave and plenty of feathering.
Moulting: Mild.
HEALTH AND PHYSICAL NEEDS
Exercise Needs: A relaxed breed who are happy to lounge around, but if kept fit are capable of going for long walks. Daily walking is recommended to keep fit and healthy, as well as some playtime.
Enrichment toys, activities, and training is great to keep healthy and stimulated.
Diet: A sweet expression that holds the power to extract unlimited supplies of food from people under their spell and not surprisingly can easily become overweight by being spoilt.
1/2 to 1 cup of high quality food a day, divided into two meals. This is a guide and how much your dog eats depends on their size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. Dogs are individuals, just like people, and they don’t all need the same amount of food.

- The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is nicknamed “The Comforter Spaniel” as they are known for their friendliness and affection, they bond with their masters so strongly.
- They come in multiple colours, including Blenheim (chestnut/tan and white), tricolour (black, tan and white), ruby (solid red-brown colour) and black and tan.
- Named after King Charles II, who lived and ruled England in the 17th century, was an extremely devoted fan of the toy spaniels and it is said that the king instituted a law that said no King Charles Spaniel could be barred from any public place.
