Three ways to book cat sitting

Service What happens Best for Price from
Home visits A sitter visits for about 20 minutes, 1 or 2 times a day, to feed, water, scoop the litter and check on your cat Healthy adult cats who are happy at home $45 a day, or $90 for 2 visits
House sitting A sitter stays overnight in your guest room, from at least 8pm to 6am Cats who don't like being alone, multi-pet homes, longer trips $45 a night (flat rate)
Boarding at the sitter's home Your cat stays with the sitter in an indoor, cat-safe room Cats who need someone around most of the day $45 to $85 a night per pet

Many cats are territorial and settle best in their own home, so most owners start with home visits. If you're unsure, ask your vet.

What a cat sitter does on each visit

  • Fresh food and water, following your cat's routine
  • Scoop or refresh the litter tray
  • Check your cat is eating, drinking, toileting and moving normally
  • Give oral medication or injections, if the sitter offers it and you leave written instructions
  • Play and brushing time, if your cat enjoys it
  • Bring in mail and check doors and windows are secure
  • Send you a photo update

You provide your cat's food, litter and any medication for the whole stay.

Four checks before you book a cat sitter

Anyone can call themselves a cat sitter. Before you hand over your keys, check these four things on the sitter's listing.

  1. Identity - Sitters on PetCloud verify their identity with a government-issued ID check through National Crime Check, an ACIC-accredited body.
  2. Character history - Sitters must have a clear police check before they can list services. A police check only shows past records, so the next three checks still matter.
  3. Knowledge and skills - Look for the badge for PetCloud's Pet Professional Training Course, developed with veterinarian Dr Mandy Paterson. It covers pet first aid, duty of care, council laws and reducing escape and injury risk. The course is optional, so not every sitter has it.
  4. Care and competence reviews - Reviews on PetCloud only come from confirmed bookings, so they can't be written by friends or bought.

Then meet the sitter before you book. Walk through your home together using the Property Safety Checklist, checking for open windows, gaps and other escape routes.

Cats with special needs

Some sitters on PetCloud have experience with senior cats, kittens, anxious cats and cats on daily medication or insulin. Use the Special Needs filter in search to find sitters who give oral medication or injections, or sitters who are vets and vet nurses. See special needs pet care.

How booking a cat sitter works

1

Search or post a job

Search by suburb, or post a job with your dates and your cat's routine. Available sitters within 25km apply.

2

Meet and greet

Meet the sitter, introduce your cat and do the property safety check together. Recommended, not required.

3

Book and pay

You pay when you confirm. Your payment is held securely until after your 24-hour quality check window.

4

Get daily updates

Your sitter sends photo updates through the PetCloud app while you're away.

A booking fee of 10%, capped at $40, applies. It helps fund advertising and keeps your payment held securely until after your 24-hour quality check window.

Each sitter sets their own cancellation policy, shown on their listing. Policies need either 1 day's notice by midday, 7 days' notice or 14 days' notice. In peak periods like Christmas, sitters may turn away other bookings to take yours, so most refunds won't cover a change of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

A cat sitter feeds your cat, refreshes water, cleans the litter tray and checks your cat's health. They can also give medication, play with your cat and send photo updates. On PetCloud, you choose between home visits, house sitting or boarding at the sitter's home.

A cat sitter on PetCloud can visit your home to feed your cat and clean the litter, stay at your home, or care for your cat at their home. Many cats are happiest staying at home with daily visits.

Home visits on PetCloud start from $45 for one visit a day and from $90 for two. Boarding at a sitter's home starts from $45 a night per pet, and house sitting from $45 a night. Sitters set their own prices, shown on each listing.

Cats still need fresh food and water, a clean litter tray and someone to check on them every day. A daily home visit means any problem is noticed quickly.

Most cats need at least one visit a day. Book two visits a day if your cat needs medication, eats wet food twice a day or doesn't like being alone.

Most healthy adult cats shouldn't go more than 24 hours without someone checking on them, so book at least one home visit a day. Kittens, senior cats, and cats on medication or wet food usually need two visits a day. A sitter can feed your cat, clean the litter tray, check for signs of illness and send you photo updates.

Many cats are territorial and settle best in their own home, so a cat sitter doing home visits or house sitting is often less stressful than a cattery or boarding. Boarding can suit cats that need someone with them for most of the day, such as cats needing frequent medication. If you're unsure, ask your vet.

Yes, if the sitter offers it. Use the Special Needs filter to find sitters who give oral medication or injections, and leave clear written instructions from your vet. Talk it through at the meet and greet before you book.

Keep your cat at home if you can, with the same food, litter and hiding spots. Ask the sitter to keep visits calm and quiet and to let your cat come to them. Tell the sitter where your cat usually hides, so they can check on them without stress.

Yes. House sitting is a flat nightly rate however many pets you have. Boarding is priced per night per pet. Home visit prices are set by each sitter, so check their listing.

Yes. Book daily visits or house sitting for as long as you're away. Sitters are more likely to offer a discount for long stays and repeat bookings.

Post a job on PetCloud with your dates and your cat's routine, and available sitters in your area apply. Compare their listings and reviews from confirmed bookings, then arrange a meet and greet.

You pay when you confirm the booking. Your payment is held securely and released after your 24-hour quality check window. A booking fee of 10%, capped at $40, applies.

You do, as the owner. Your own pet insurance policy is usually the first cover. For minor concerns, the sitter can use an on-demand video vet consult. In an emergency, the sitter takes your cat to the nearest open emergency vet.

Cats should be kept indoors during a booking. Walk through your home with your sitter at the meet and greet using PetCloud's free Property Safety Checklist, created with a veterinarian, and check that doors, windows and screens are secure so your cat can't escape.

Some cats will take a tablet in a treat or pill pocket. Others need it placed gently at the back of the mouth. If your cat struggles, ask your vet about other options. Cat sitters on PetCloud can give medication if you leave clear instructions.

Keep your cat in a quiet room with their bed, litter tray and food during the move. Once you arrive, set up one room for them first and keep them indoors for a few weeks while they adjust. A cat sitter can help keep their routine steady if you are busy with the move.
